Prof. Vincent Lum

 Dear members of Prof. Sa's Funeral Committee:

Upon my return from the trip last night, I received from Prof. Wang Shan the shocking message of Prof. Sa's passing. Prof Sa died while we were on our trip. With a very heavy heart and great sorrow I am writing this note.

I knew Prof. Sa for about 3 decades; our relationship moved from professional to personal. Through him I met many friends in China. As many people already noted, Prof. Sa's contribution to the technical community, especially in database development, and education has been inmeasurable and he will always be remembered for them. Unquestionably the country will miss a top thinker and mover with his passing.

To me, there is the other side that touched me personally even deeper. Over the years we have become good friends. He was a very kind, considerate and gentle person. While he had great intensity in the pursuit of his work, he always retained his gentle, good nature. Prof. Sa and I saw each other from time to time for many years; we were very happy whenever that happened and we seemed to have much to talk about. During the years while I lived in Hong Kong, we saw each other several times a year. We even had occasions to visit each other's home and met our spouses.

There is a side of Prof. Sa's that many might not have known. Prof. Sa had a great sense of humor. My wife will always remember him for his teasing of her in several occasions. She remembers him fondly of those gentle teases.

My wife and I will both miss him tremendously. As we all know, it is very hard to have a good friend like Prof. Sa.
